Uruguayan Extradited from Brazil for Murder in Argentina

A Uruguayan citizen accused of killing Fabián Sturm Jardón in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Recoleta in December 2024 was extradited from Brazil on Wednesday night. Official sources confirmed to the Argentine News Agency that this is Rodolfo Nicolás Carballo Escobar, 32, who was arrested in Brazil at the end of last May. Carballo Escobar arrived in Argentina at 8:40 p.m. from Florianópolis, escorted by personnel from the International Cooperation Directorate of the Argentine Federal Police. The transfer had tense moments, as the detainee was reluctant to adjust his behavior to the officers' instructions. However, after realizing that his transfer was inevitable and the guards' firm stance, he had no choice but to relax his attitude. Upon arriving in the country, the necessary procedural acts (reading of rights) were carried out, and then he was taken for a medical examination. The investigation began in 2022 after the accused fled from a prison in Montevideo, where he was serving a sentence for homicide and illegal possession of weapons. After escaping by hiding in a waste container, Interpol issued a Red Notice. According to the investigation, the fugitive first hid in Brazil and then entered Argentina in 2023 under a false identity, where he committed two homicides, one of which was that of Sturm Jardón, which was recorded by security cameras and went viral. Personnel from the Homicide Division of the Federal Police identified the attacker, determined that he used a wig to commit the crime, fled in a stolen car—later found in Palermo—and that the victim had been previously threatened. Based on the evidence gathered, the Federal Justice of Campana ordered his international capture, and the case fell under the jurisdiction of the Prosecutor's Office for Narcocriminality (PROCUNAR), after it was established that the accused was a hitman for a transnational narcocriminal organization. 'Through cyber-patrolling and information exchange with Interpol, he was located in Florianópolis, Brazil, where he was arrested in May 2025,' they reported. During the operation, 21 kilos of marijuana, cash, and vehicles were seized. Finally, on Tuesday, a commission from the Argentine Federal Police traveled to Brazil, took custody of the detainee, and completed his extradition.

Jardón was shot dead on December 12, 2024, in front of a kiosk located at the intersection of Paraguay and Agüero streets, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Recoleta. With the progress of the investigation and the identification of the victim, it was confirmed that Jardón had a warrant for his arrest for the narco-murder of Marcelo González Algerini in October 2023 in Pilar. The Justice understands that Sturm was not the material author of the murder, but that both were linked to a very powerful drug gang in the province.

Interestingly, it was confirmed that the same weapon was used for the murders of Sturm and Algerini, which led to the conclusion that Escobar was the one who killed them.
